Monotheism and Polytheism

Why did the world go from a civilization that was 90% polytheistic to a civilization that was 90% monotheistic?

I believe that this dramatic effect on society happened because monotheism can be seen as a step forward.  I think that because it is more "advanced" because it is true.  Could monotheism really be a step backwards?  Its more of a sense of a community, easier to comprehend, Monotheism is more forceful and more powerful towards their believers of the religions.  Maybe as time went by, Monotheistic became more prominent through out the years of an ever changing society.  Now a days Islamic, Judaism, and Christianity are the worlds most dominant religions and they are all Monotheistic.  Polytheism civilizations probably had no trouble coming up with things that would make there religion stick and hold.
Monotheism, which is one god provides the organization to the believers of that faith.  In our groups decisions it was talked about that Monotheism was more strict about religious stuff.  What happened to that? Why isn't it the same now, its 2012 and now people a days don't go to temple or church as much as it was taught into the religion many years ago.

Why is Monotheism better than Polytheism?

In the modern world Monotheism is a more dominate religion than Polytheism.  Perhaps Monotheism itself wasn't the advance part, but it was the things that were brought up along it. Like when I was taughted in Hebrew School that the leading that Monotheism was that Moses thought and saw like poor and rich were equal.  Monotheism can be a step forward from polytheism because it gives an interllecttual to a God to the believers of the faith.  Monotheism is better than Polytheism because Polytheism its independent and more difficult to put into our daily lives.  Even both of the two different types of religion, the believers are able to pray when ever is needed.
